AIThalassemia is an innovative platform designed to identify carriers of thalassemia using routine
complete blood count (CBC) data.

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce hemoglobin and
healthy red blood cells. Many carriers have no symptoms, yet two carriers have a 25 % risk of having a
child with severe thalassemia.

By analysing simple laboratory results such as mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular
hemoglobin (MCH) and red‑blood‑cell (RBC) count, our AI engine flags individuals who may be carriers.

Why early screening matters

Approximately 5 % of the world’s population carries a thalassemia gene variant, and severe forms of the disease require lifelong transfusions and iron‑chelation therapy. Early detection allows families to make informed reproductive choices and reduces the burden of thalassemia.

National screening programs have achieved remarkable success; for example, Cyprus’s premarital screening programme reduced the incidence of thalassemia by 95 %

How AIThalassemia works

Collect CBC data: Hospitals and labs send hemoglobin, MCV, MCH and RBC values from standard blood tests.

AI analysis: The algorithm compares values against research‑based cut‑offs (MCV < 80 fL or MCH < 27 pg)
and uses machine‑learning models to predict carrier status.

Risk report: Results are categorized as normal, borderline or likely carrier, with clear recommendations for
confirmatory testing and counselling.
